Old School Tribute: "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase, Sr.
I was watching a few videos of Ted DiBiase the other day. This guy is a class act. I was thoroughly entertained by his antics, his vignettes, his promos and his matches. He’s got a very distinct look that really matches his character. And that evil laugh! This guy might just be my favourite from the era. A villainous millionaire who flaunted his wealth unlike any other.
Don’t get me wrong. I love Del Rio and I love ol’ Jibbles. But if there’s anyone who knew how to portray a character like this with much perfection, it was DiBiase. Granted, things were very campy back then. If Ted pulled off the stuff he did in the modern era, people would find it corny and cartoony. As a consequence, Del Rio and JBL have chosen a darker, a more serious path with their characters. But what bothers me is that they have never used their money for evil. We just know they’re rich because they’re rolling out in their limousines and luxury cars. But they’ve never tried screwing a little kid over $50, renting a public pool for personal use, or buying a prestigious title. Anyone can do the stuff JBL and Del Rio are doing and get over but not everyone can be a evil millionaire.
